Chapter 54
Chapter 54:.
A week passed since Matthew left. Eventually, Dolores calmed down and went back to work as normal.
“I heard that Mr. Nelson had gone to Country A to keep Miss White company.” Everyone began to gossip over lunch.
“Since Mr. Nelson already considered Miss White his girlfriend, it was only natural that he would go to see her. Except…” The lady looked in her pocket mirror and adjusted her hair. She looked at herself in the mirror and smiled. It seemed to her that the woman in the mirror was indeed a beauty.
Everyone was already used to her self-proclaimed beauty, but they were curious as to what she meant, “Except what?”
The woman looked at everyone and said, “If Mr. Nelson really liked her, why would he send her to Country A? There are so many people in the company.
Why can’t he send someone else?”.
Some thought he was right. But others disagreed.
“If it were as you mention, Mr. Nelson doesn’t like Miss White, then how do you explain why he didn’t come to the company for a week just to deal with her? He should know that had not happened in the past.”
Both were right, but their point of view differed. Some said Matthew loved Helen while others disagreed.
“Hey, Dolores, what do you think, does Mr. Nelson love Miss White?” A classmate asked Dolores who was sitting quietly in her place, “Why don’t you participate with the group?”

Dolores laughed bitterly inwardly. Wasn’t it ridiculous to discuss whether her “husband” loved another woman?
A female companion shook Dolores, “Say something, will you?”
Dolores helplessly spoke her mind, “I don’t know. I just came to the company and I don’t understand his relationship. I think he must like her, otherwise why does he consider her his girlfriend?”.
Everyone was silent for several seconds and thought she was right. If Matthew didn’t love Helen, why would he acknowledge her condition?
“See, I knew Mr. Nelson loves Miss White.”
They kept gossiping and Dolores made up an excuse to sneak away from them. When recess was over, everyone left and Dolores returned to her seat to work.
Matthew did not return that day.
Dolores wanted some time alone after hearing the gossip from classmates.
Who was going to expect Coral to give the ruckus when she went home?
“Why hasn’t Young Master returned?”
Dolores felt a headache and rubbed her temples. Coral thought she wasn’t feeling well and asked, “Are you feeling sick?”
Dolores shook her head, “No.”
“Then you…”
“Oh…” Dolores suddenly detected a fishy smell, frowned, and looked at Coral, “Did you buy fish?”
Coral nodded and pointed to the groceries on the table, “I just went to the supermarket. I’m going to cook fish for your dinner…”
Before she could finish, Dolores had already covered her mouth and was running to the bathroom to vomit.
Coral hurried and stood by the door looking at Dolores, “You…. Are you pregnant?”
Although Dolores and Matthew had slept in different rooms, they had shared the same room during their wedding night. Perhaps they conceived on the first try?
Coral was elated, “Come on, let’s go to the hospital.” With a child, any lover would have to be ruled out.
Dolores shook her head, “No need. I have… gastric discomfort.”
“Then we’ll have to go too.” Coral was determined and trusted only the doctors.
“Coral.” Dolores struggled but Coral didn’t let go of her hand, “I’m doing it for your sake.”
“Change your shoes.” Coral tugged on Dolores.
Dolores didn’t dare to exert too much force for fear of hurting Coral and the baby in her abdomen.
Clunk!
Just as Dolores was trying to figure out how to convince Coral, the door was pushed open. Dolores and Coral looked toward the door at the same time.
Matthew walked in with his jacket over his arm. His collar was unbuttoned and his shirt was open, exposing his collarbones. His chin was bearded and his eyes were dark from lack of rest. He was not his usual self, which showed that he was really tired. Dolores thought he must not have rested well since he was there to take care of Helen.noveldrama
When she saw that it was Matthew, Coral felt elated, “Young Master, the lady is probably pregnant.”
Matthew’s expression did not change, while Dolores felt embarrassed. Their gazes crossed but everyone understood the situation. Only Coral was unaware of the truth and so she glared at Matthew, “Aren’t you glad your wife is pregnant?”
Matthew frowned deeply and said calmly, “Let’s get a divorce.”
It was a matter of time. Only she didn’t think it would happen so suddenly. It was an illicit engagement and it had to be ended. Nothing was holding her back, except that she felt empty. Everything was empty to her.
She smiled, “Okay.”
She responded so willingly that Matthew couldn’t react. It was hard for him to accept her willingness to divorce.
Dolores said calmly, “Let’s do it tomorrow.” She turned to go back to her room as soon as she finished saying.
Coral felt as if she had been struck by lightning. Did they want a divorce? Was marriage a game to them?
“Young Master, you, do you want a divorce?” Coral thought she had heard wrong. Why would he suddenly ask for a divorce and they were both so calm about it?
“I’m tired.” Matthew was unwilling to talk about this. Thereafter he headed for his room.
Coral was stunned and stared at Matthew’s back, “This was the marriage your mother arranged for you when she was alive.”
Matthew’s footsteps stopped momentarily and he continued up the stairs.
Coral insisted, “Don’t you even bother when the missus is pregnant?”.
Bang! The bedroom door slammed shut. Matthew expressed his unhappiness without saying a word.
The baby inside Dolores wasn’t his, it wasn’t his! He wouldn’t be so angry if the child was his. But her child was dead – dead!
Coral was startled, as she rarely vented her anger at home.
Dolores hardly slept that night. She sat at the head of the bed with her luggage packed. She didn’t have many belongings anyway. She only had a few clothes and some toiletries.
When dawn broke, he changed his clothes and left the room. Matthew also woke up and dressed in a well-tailored business suit that covered his tall, sturdy frame. He was elegant and handsome like a prince out of fairy tales. He exuded nobility, he was dashing and his magnetism was unparalleled.
Dolores spoke first: “It’s still early and the marriage registry has not opened. I’ll go out first to run an errand.” He looked at the time as he said, “I’ll be back at nine. Are you free at that time?”
She had to go find a place to stay. Matthew initiated the divorce so suddenly that it gave him no time to prepare. This was her mistake as she should have been better prepared.
Matthew came downstairs and said, “Abbott will settle the divorce.” After saying this, he headed for the dining room.
Dolores scoffed to herself – how could she forget? It was Abbott who took her to do the marriage certificate and Matthew did not go personally. So now, similarly, there was no need for Matthew to go and do the divorce proceedings.
Their marriage was arranged by fate and had been fixed since they were young. However, this short-lived marriage was now a joke. Dolores took a deep breath. It was time to end this.
Matthew sat down at the dining room table for breakfast.
Dolores came over and sat down across from him and asked, “How is Miss White?”
He went to see her and made up his mind to divorce her so that he would also be ready to marry Helen.
But didn’t he know that Helen was very shrewd?
